I spoke to a banker deploying $500M + into Africa.
His firm just opened an office in New York...
The intention is to bring US capital to Africa. I found this interesting since most investors chase the same markets, and Africa is often a forgotten continent.
He told me that's exactly the point.
- Actively deploying capital to 35+ countries
- Sub-Saharan, East and West Africa focus
- Private credit, equity and structured deals
- Minimum $5–6M tickets, up to $500M+
- A preference for cash-generating businesses
- They'll also look at real estate opportunities
Of all the private credit deployed globally, less than 0.3% goes to Africa. I couldn't believe it.
He said the four markets getting the most attention right now are South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Egypt.
The sectors where the money is actually going:
- Agriculture and energy (40% of all deals)
- Infrastructure and real estate
- Fintech and financial services
Deal volume increased 23% last year. So, I expect to see a lot more activity there over the next few years.
Are you investing or lending to Africa?
