The UK just launched a £500M sovereign AI fund.

The goal: reduce dependence on US tech...

The Sovereign AI Fund makes direct equity investments of up to £20M into UK-based AI startups - keeping talent, IP, and economic value at home.

- £500M government-backed venture fund
- Equity investments of £1M–£20M per company
- Fast-track visas for international AI talent
- First investment: Callosum

The compute cohort includes Prima Mente, Cosine, Cursive, and Odyssey. Each gets up to 1 million GPU hours on UK supercomputing infrastructure.

The UK isn't trying to outspend the US.

It's targeting the niches America isn't focused on - sovereign inference, biological foundation models, agentic AI, and simulation.

£500M is roughly 0.08% of OpenAI's valuation.
Nobody is pretending this closes the gap.

This isn't about whether the UK can beat the US at AI.

It's whether the UK can build enough leverage to stop being dependent on US (and Asian) technology.

Do you think £500M is enough to matter?
