I met someone who buys newsletters for a living.
Mine started recently, so I wanted to pick their brain...
I assumed the pitch was simple: get big, then sell. Turns out that's not what they're buying at all.
Things they look for:
- Engaged subscribers (open rates + click rates)
- Revenue per subscriber, not just total revenue
- How dependent the whole thing is on you personally
- Whether your niche has real defensibility
- The list must be clean (subscriber consent records)
Then he mentioned some numbers that almost made me spit out my coffee during the call:
- The Free Press newsletter sold for $150M.
- The Morning Brew newsletter sold for $75M.
- The Hustle newsletter sold for $27M.
- The Peak newsletter sold for $5M.
I didn't know this was a real market.
Apparently it's been one for years.
My 250+ subscribers suddenly feel like 'day one' of something, not just a newsletter. The goal is 20,000+
On that note, subscribe to my newsletter.
Do you have a newsletter? Tell me about it!
